Mark's story

Before The Show Them Project, before the talks and the tours, before the mission—there was Mark Bragg. A man who knows, first-hand, the devastating reality of addiction, mental illness, and the long road to recovery.

His story isn’t easy to hear. But it’s real. And that’s exactly why it needs to be told.

Mark began adulthood with ambition and a strong sense of purpose. Joining the military, he hoped to build a career defined by discipline, service, and pride. But life took an unexpected turn.

His time in the forces ended sooner than he imagined, and what followed was confusion, frustration, and a growing sense of failure. The structure and belonging he had hoped to find were gone. In their place came self-doubt—and, eventually, escape through drugs and alcohol.

Despite his inner struggles, Mark worked his way into a successful career in the private security industry. Over the years, he protected world-famous musicians, Premier League footballers, and celebrities, even running his own business.

To the outside world, he looked like a man who had made it. But behind the façade, addiction and mental health issues were slowly taking over. Denial became his armour. Each drink, each fix, each lie—to himself and others—was another attempt to hide the pain.

Addiction eventually took everything it could. The business failed. Friendships and family relationships fractured. The sense of identity and purpose that had once driven him disappeared completely.

Mark found himself in secure psychiatric units, battling the chaos in his mind while addiction continued to tighten its grip. Homelessness followed—days and nights on the streets, a life stripped of dignity, direction, and hope.

At his lowest point, Mark could no longer see a way out. The pain, shame, and hopelessness became unbearable. In complete despair, he attempted to take his own life.

It was a moment that could have ended everything—but instead, it became the beginning of something new. A turning point. A lifeline.

Waking up after that moment, Mark realised that survival meant more than just staying alive—it meant changing everything.

At 40 years old, he entered recovery. The road was long and brutal, but step by step, he rebuilt his life. Through honesty, support, and the courage to face himself, Mark got clean—and began to heal.

A New Purpose: The Show Them Project

From that recovery was born a mission—to use his story to prevent others from ever reaching the same darkness.

Through The Show Them Project, Mark now tours schools and communities across the UK, delivering a raw, unfiltered account of addiction, mental illness, and recovery. His honesty connects deeply with young people, challenging them to think about the choices they make and the lives they want to live.

“If my story can stop one person from going down the same road I did, then everything I went through has meaning.”
